Highlights from our NYC trip!

We traveled to New York City to ring in my 28th birthday (huge shoutout to my company for helping me fly up and putting us up for two days, despite the holiday office party—our original purpose for going—being canceled). Here are the highlights of what we did each day of the five-day visit!

Day 1

We visited Brooklyn and got some work done at my sister-in-law’s apartment, then checked into our hotel. More work followed, then lunch and dinner out at an Alex-Delany-approved restaurant.

  • Lunch: The Dutch, 131 Sullivan St

  • Dinner: Altro Paradiso, 234 Spring St

Pictured is the panna cotta and the biscotti from Altro Paradiso. Also worth highlighting is the arancini from there, and the cornbread from The Dutch!

Day 2

We worked from the hotel in the morning, then got takeaway sandwiches from a great spot in SoHo before Sean went off on his own adventures for the afternoon. We met back up for dinner and a trip to the Rockefeller Center to see the tree!

  • Lunch: Sandwiches from Pepe Rosso to Go, 149 Sullivan St

  • Dinner: Pho from Hello Saigon, 180 Bleecker St

  • Drinks: The Bar Room, 117 E 60th St

Pictured is us in front of the tree, taken by a lovely stranger!

Day 3

We checked out of the first hotel and then into the Maritime Hotel, the true star of this trip. It had a beautiful lobby, exceptional service, and I fell in love with the wood paneling and porthole windows. We celebrated my birthday at Dirt Candy, a vegetarian restaurant with a prix fixe tasting menu that was delicious and fun!

  • Breakfast: Amelia’s Diner, 110 Varick St

  • Lunch: Xi’an Famous Foods, 96 8th Ave

  • Snack: Amy’s Bread, Chelsea Market

  • Dinner: Dirt Candy, 86 Allen St

Pictured is my favorite course from the Dirt Candy tasting menu, the sunchokes.

Day 4

After much imbibing at Dirt Candy, we spent a slow morning in search of bagels in Chelsea. We got to see an old friend from college for lunch, then enjoyed a quick meal at Thai Villa for dinner.

  • Breakfast: Zucker’s Bagels & Smoked Fish, 242 8th Ave

  • Lunch: Jajaja, 162 E Broadway St

  • Dinner: Thai Villa, 5 E 19th St

Pictured is the Pad Krapraw (basil tofu) and the Hung Lay (pork tenderloin curry) from Thai Villa.

Day 5

I sought out breakfast at Fabrique, after reading a rave review of the cardamom bun (it was fine, I much preferred the almond one). We got to walk around the Whitney to shelter from the cold, then met up with my sister-in-law one last time before heading to the airport.

  • Breakfast: Fabrique, 348 W 14th St

  • Lunch: Artichoke Basille for pizza, 114 10th Ave

  • Snack: Tea & Sympathy, 108 Greenwich Ave

Pictured is Fabrique’s store window—so tempting from the street! That’s a pile of cardamom buns in the front
